PDC: Noise Control Engineering

This PDC has been presented annually at the American Industrial Hygiene Association Conference and Exhibition and has been the top ranked (#1) course 13 out of the past 15 years. Mr. Driscoll is a registered Professional Engineer and Board Certified Noise Control Engineer. He is also Past President of the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA), a Fellow Member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), past Chair of the AIHA Noise Committee, and recently completed a five-year term as a Council Member of the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation. Finally, he served as Co-Editor of the new AIHA Noise Manual, and was lead author for the chapters on Noise Control Engineering (Chapter 9) and Community Noise (Chapter 15).

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The most effective way to prevent occupational noise-induced hearing loss is through effective implementation of engineering noise controls. With some advanced education and training, it is feasible for industrial hygienists with a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of noise to develop noise control solutions; establish noise control priorities; identify and select optimum products for retrofitting equipment; work effectively with design engineers to implement a pro-active approach to noise control; and predict the impact new equipment will on the existing noise levels.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this training course, the attendees should be able to understand and apply the course concepts to:

  • Quantify a noise environment as it affects worker hearing-loss risk, and identification of the noise generating mechanisms requiring noise control measures,
  • Proficiently use acoustical instrumentation, and process and analyze data,
  • Determine potential engineering noise controls for retrofit to existing equipment,
  • Work with the design contractor and suppliers to achieve the stated noise criteria or goals;
  • Deal with acoustical vendors for purchasing commercially available noise control products to retrofit existing equipment that produces excessive noise.
